Dremont-Marroy arrives

This grower comes from the fourth generation of winemakers in the family, with the son and daughter starting off a radical new project. They started in 2016 following the philosophies and principles of their predecessors. Those of the grandmother, who was a teacher in the morning and managed the vineyard rows in her free time, and of their parents, who started from just 1 hectare to expand to the current 7.5.

But who are these new kids of the vineyards, as they like to call themselves? The first to fully dedicate to the business is Jean-Rémi while the sister Mélanie arrived two years later, after her studies in ecology in Paris.

They quickly turned to organic farming and a variety of sustainable practices, from grassing between the rows and plowing with the horse. But not just any horse. From a nearly extinct breed,  the Boulonnais or the ‘white marble’ horse. A lot of work, but for what reason? Minimally invasive practices preserve the variability of their 23 vineyard parcels spread across 4 municipalities along the western Marne.

The meandering Marne river along Charly-sur-Marne offers a unique U-curve of numerous terroirs and soil structures with varying aspects. Soils can vary from heavy clay, to light sand with numerous ancient alluvial sediments. Combining erosion and sedimentation, the Marne has drawn over time a deep sinuosity in the rock, giving birth to a complex terroir where different types of soil and varied exposures combine which allow the vines to express themselves on each plot of land in a different way.

Champagne Dremont-Marroy La Lierie
Lierie : Local dialect meaning to bind strands of young vines on horizontal wires.

47 % Chardonnay and 53% Pinot Noir. 70% Harvest 2019 and 30% reserve wine. Dosage zero. An extended period of aging on the fine lies after alcoholic fermentation, providing body and smoothness. The micro-oxygenation technique is used with oak barrels from 220L to 600L to give the wine a lovely patina, developing a subtle combination of complex but delicate aromas. The initial intensity and freshness of the terroir is preserved by there being no malolactic fermentation process. A minimum 30-month aging period with no dosage at disgorgement. A beautiful fresh and invigorating blend of pinot and chardonnay with 20% oak maturation. The purity of both grape varieties is allowed to express its strength, held in check by zero dosage. This is the same cuvee as last years import but now with an extra 12 months aging on lees. Recently won a Readers’ Choice Gold Award of *La Revue du vin de France* 2024. Limited.

Champagne Dremont-Marroy Le Triau
Triau: Local dialect to describe regenerative practices of the earth.

15 % Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir, 55% meunier. Harvest 2020 and 2019, 30% oak maturation. Dosage at 2gm. A beautifully round and complex assembly of the three major grape varieties, all held in balance with subtle oak maturation for 30% of the blend. Fruit picked at optimal ripeness is allowed to express the cepage origins and their terroir. The blocking of malo with a subtle 2gm dosage is the perfect final solution. The meunier component adds a gentle smoky complexity compared with the Lierie. Tension and minerality with savory overtones thanks to the oak component. This new incarnation of La Triau, reveals to us the quality of the 2020 vintage. Lovely acidity and texture. Such a beautiful expression of the terroir and the direction of the Dremont-Marroy family.

Champagne Dremont-Marroy 2020 Noir de Meandre
Illustrated by a vine stock “cep”

60% Meunier, 40% Pinot-Noir, 50% oak maturation, dosage 3gm, no malolactic. Vintage 2020. A beautifully subtle expression of black varieties, picked at perfect maturity. The subtle oak adds a level of citrus and sherbet overtones. Red and yellow fruit aromas, lead onto a very expansive long concentrated palate. Champagne with shoulders and intensity that would match chicken and veal winter dishes beautifully and also has the richness to match spicy Asian dishes.  The wine-making philosophy here is to express the purity and intensity of the harvest. So every year the cuvee can be a different interpretation. Last year’s version of this cuvee was vintage 2018 with malo and with dosage zero. This 2020 version is more mineral and saline thanks to no malo and a subtle dosage of 3gm. 2020 is a tighter racier expression than 2018. Stunning purity. LIMITED.

Champagne Dremont-Marroy Eclosion Pinot Noir 2019
Just like the soil on which our grapes grow,
our egg-shaped vats are made up of limestone and clay.

A single parcel pinot noir, 60% concrete egg and 40% barrel.Dosage zero vintage 2019. The natural porosity of the egg allows for a subtle micro-oxygenation, preserving the authenticity of the fruit and terroir. A long tirage in bottle adds a beautiful aromatic richness and length. Dosage is zero of course. The nose reveals hints of vanilla and almonds slowly expanding to show brioche overtones, leading onto a hugely savory complex palate with salinity, tension and pastry overtones. The great 2019 vintage is on show here, purity, elegance and beautiful texture. From a single parcel in Pavant showing intensity and elegance of great pinot noir.LIMITED

Champagne Dremont-Marroy Eclosion Chardonnay 2019
Just like the soil on which our grapes grow,
our egg-shaped vats are made up of limestone and clay.

65% concrete egg and 35% barrel. 100% chardonnay. Dosage zero vintage 2019. From two old vine parcels. Maturation in egg vessels is extremely weird. One gets the micro finesse and subtle nuances that oak maturation can bring but without any overly oak taste. The neutrality of concrete preserves the freshness and lemony aromas of Chardonnay, while the wood provides ideal support for the development of more evolved yeast-driven aromas. We have amazing purity and clarity of chardonnay all wrapped in subtle smoky overtones.
